How to use it

  1. Click Copy code (or Download).
  2. Paste it into any text editor and save it as tic-tac-toe.html.
  3. Open the file in Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge. That's it, it runs offline.

How the code works

The board is an array

The 9 squares are an array of 9 values (X, O or null). The 8 winning lines are listed as index triples, like [0, 1, 2].

Minimax

The computer tries every possible move, then every reply to it, all the way to the end of the game. It scores wins +10, losses โˆ’10 and draws 0, and picks the move with the best guaranteed result.

Making it beatable

MISTAKE_CHANCE makes the computer play a random move now and then. Set it to 0 and it never loses.

Make it your own

All the settings are at the top of the script. Change a value, save and reload:

SettingDefaultWhat it does
MISTAKE_CHANCE0.2how often the computer plays a random move (0 = it never loses)
CPU_DELAY400ms the computer "thinks" before it moves
X"X"the two symbols (try emoji like "๐Ÿฑ" and "๐Ÿถ")
O"O"the two symbols (try emoji like "๐Ÿฑ" and "๐Ÿถ")
